…a San Fermín venimos…

July 6, 2008 · No Comments

These days a Spanish big celebration takes place in Pamplona. It is the Festival of San Fermín. As many people say it is one of the most memorable events one can visit in Spain.

Hemingway brought the festival into the North American consciousness in his novel The Sun also Rises.

“At noon of Sunday, the sixth of July, the fiesta exploded. There is no other way to describe it . . . before the waiter brought the sherry the rocket that announced the fiesta went up in the square. It burst and there was a grey ball of smoke high up above the plaza. The ball of smoke hung in the sky like a shrapnel burst, and as I watched, another rocket came up to it, trickling smoke in the bright sunlight. I saw the bright flash as it burst and another little cloud of smoke appeared. By the time the second rocket had burst, there were so many people in the arcade, that had been empty a minute before, that the waiter, holding the bottle high over his head, could hardly get through the crowd to our table. People were coming into the square from all sides, and down the street we heard the pipes and the fifes and the drums coming.” –Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises

La Fiesta de San Fermín originated in 1591 when 3 festivals - the San Fermín festival, town fair of Pamplona and a celebration of bullfighting were combined in to one. Saint Fermín was a Pamplona bishop who travelled far and wide converting people to Christianity. However his views were not shared by everyone and he met his bloody end in Amiens, France where he was beheaded.

The Pamplona locals have since honoured him with a festival in his name. Everyone dresses in white, with a red bandana, and red sash, in memory of the blood shed by the martyred Saint.

Every morning, during the La Fiesta de San Fermín festival week, the bulls are let loose in the streets and run from various points to the bullring. Thousands of (mainly) men however, run the streets with the bulls. It is absolutely amazing to watch, and every few years one of the intrepid runners ends up dead. Certain streets are boarded up so that the bulls are channelled eventually to the bullring. And everyone is welcome to run along with.

My personal way to celebrate La Fiesta de San Fermín is dressing Bert up like a brave runner… hi hi hi :)

PO-DE-MOS ! (We can make it)

As you can see, Romy is ready to cheer on Spanish football team in Vienna! She looks forward to watching the European Championship final match between Spain and Germany! May the best team win!

A few months ago, Laura showed us a gorgeous Dear Jane quilt in her blog. At that time, I did not have any idea about what Dear Jane quilts were. So, I did investigate a little bit about DJ, I mean, I bougth the book, even the background fabric. However, I could not start my DJ because of my back to Spain, the new projects in the lab, the competition for a position…uff…many many things to solve…

FINALLY, today I managed to finish the first two blocks for the Dear Jane project that Georgina and Noelia promote in their blogs. These blocks correspond to A8 and B13 numbers. In my case, making a Dear Jane quilt is too ambitious since I do not have enough free time. Let’s see how far I go…

In the pictures below, I show you my contributions to Karrin’s block within the “New to the group RR ” of Crazy Quilting International Yahoo Group. In this fabulous block, I embroidered the vegetable garden and the little fountain with yellow birds. Mostly, I used bullion stich. I love it, it is very easy for me.

Eso es todo amig@s!

That’s al folks!

Home-made Lamps

May 25, 2008 · 9 Comments

This is not going to be a quilting-related post. Today, I want to show you part of my mother’s work. She is so good at embellishing objects such as roof tiles, glass, lamps and many other things. This time I am going to show you what she does with cheap Ikea lamps!

She embellishes them on a Tiffany style using lead and special paints. Many techniques can be used in order to decorate these standard lamps and get good results. Below, you can see the pictures of the different stages of the process she follows to do this work. Do you like them? I DO like them!

Summer colors - Colores veraniegos

May 16, 2008 · 4 Comments

He estado dedicándome a diversas cosillas.

I am totally recovered and the palms of my hands do not itch, so I did some work with the needle. Below, I show my progress on a little bag that I am doing for my mother. She wants this bag for keeping her small mirror, lipstick, and those other things we often carry in a purse and sometimes when they are needed ,we cannot find.

It is all made of silk fabrics, I added some feather stitches using silk threads, silk ribbon and Miyuki japanese beads. I was also practising caston stitches (they are fun), some buttonholes, bullions and chevron stitches too. I am trying to do tone-on-tone. Sometimes it is hard for me and to one point I would like to add some violets, greens, blues…..but so far I am controling myself. I really like how it is turning, but I need to think on a motiff to include in the centre.

That’s all folks!

Un día lluvioso - A rainy day

April 19, 2008 · 3 Comments

Let me give you a recommendation: Put your gloves on when washing, cleaning, etc. I tell you that because it seems that some detergents can give you some problems related to your skin. Since last Monday, I am not able to touch anything because I have a severe dermatitis on the palms of my hands…They are itching and of course….I cannot stitch, work, etc…I can hardly touch the keyborad with my fingertips! So, please, protect yourself before it is too late.

Well, very briefly, below you can see some of my progress before I got this dermatitis. I show you my work on Carol’s block for the RR of CQI, and also, I pieced two block for two cellphone puches. That’s it! See you soon.

Spring has arrived to Madrid

Hi there!

First of all, I am sorry for not posting more frequently, but I previously mentioned life is getting a bit complicated for me lately. However, if a have a free moment for me, I try to do what I love the most: stitching!

As I already said in my last post, I am taking part of a RR for CQI yahoo group. The first block I have received is gorgeous. It’s from Sherry Johnson and I must say that is a real masterpiece.

I have never had in my hands a crazy quilted block made by other person. So, when I opened the envelope and I saw it, I was surprised because it is so beautiful. Sherry made an incredible fan as a focal point in the block. I do not how she made it, but believe me, it is so well-done, and the color combinations as well is perfect! I enjoyed a lot working on this block. I decided to do some work on the upside-right corner. I included some silk ribbon embroidered roses, bullion roses and a little fan. I also did some seam treatments including japanese beads. Below, I show you the result. I hope you enjoy the pics.

Hola!

Hi there - Hola, que tal?

January 27, 2008 · 10 Comments

I have been very curious about Round Robins for a long time. I did not know very well what they were and how they worked. Finally, I enrolled in a Round Robin (RR), organized by Crazy Quilting International Yahoo group last week. This is a very active and serious group focused in Crazy Quilting. I joined it a year ago, but until now, I did not feel brave enough to participate in any of its different activities. For this RR in which I am participating, there isn’t any particular topic, it is up to our imagination.

This time my block is something different. On the one hand, it is mainly on GREEN color. I gathered many green fabrics over this months and I decided to start using them. On the other hand, I pieced it my machine following the instructions provided by Simona in her tutorial. If you are interested on curved piecing, I recommend you to visit her interesting blog

So far, to me this is my best ever block. I guess it is because I tried to be extremely careful piecing and iron it. However, I made a couple of little mistakes that I cannot rectify now. Fortunately, they are not serious mistakes :) Where are they? I cannot see them now ;)

Have a nice week.

bloque-cqi-rr1-zoom-in.jpg

No sabía exactamente qué eran y cómo funcionaban.

January 20, 2008 · 9 Comments

 Hello Folks! Hola amigos!

Here you can see the progress of my work. I am trying to fill with a embroidered motif the big blue piece in the middle of the block. I also added a few orange beads that help to catch the eye around that area. Need to keep working on this block :)

I keep on crazy quilting more blocks - Continúo con el CQ

January 13, 2008 · 8 Comments

After the bad experience I had last week working on the CQ block, I decided to make something easy. As I already found a nice fabric for the foundations of my blocks, I pieced the 12×12 inches block you can see below in blue/orange/brown colors. It is basically pieced by hand with cotton fabrics from fat quarters I bought in Ottawa. Mmm……Latelly, I think very often about the time I lived in Ottawa…. I really miss my way of life in those days, but winters ;) Well, I am planning on stitching it, doing all the crazy Q work, add the embellishments, etc. and use it as a cushion cover. What do you think about it? So, I am ready to STITCH ON IT!

bloque3.jpg

The first new year’s mistake - El primer error del año

January 7, 2008 · 5 Comments

I am a self-taught person, so I make mistakes very often. However, when that happens I try to smile and think more positively. Generally, I use muslin as foundation when I piece my crazy quilting blocks and it works perfectly. Unfortunately, I run out of the muslin fabric that I brought with me when I moved from Canada. For a few days, I was searching for a similar fabric here, in the little village where I live. In the mean time, I was prying into my mother stash….and guess what? I found a piece of fusible fabric called Fliselina. It is like a thin web that sticks to any surface when it is heated. My mistake was to use it as the foundation for hand-piecing. It worked well for keeping the pieces together in place until I basted the whole thing. However, it turned out to be nightmare when I started to embroider the seams, specially when I used silk thread! Using Fliselina, the back of the block was covered with a kind of rubbery layer that do not let the thread slip through the fabric easily and as a result my beautiful and smooth silk thread turned into kind of frayed and entangled thread. After working some seams under these conditions I decided to stop my work in this block. At that point, it was very hard and the pleasure of stitching was becoming a bad experince. The lesson I learnt from my experiment: do not use Fliselina for this kind of works. ;)
